Safety 'key' on Facebook, rep says
26 January, 2010 4:35 pM

After the tragic suicide of a Bay State teen who was bullied at school and online, Facebook said yesterday a “very small percentage” of its 350 million users fall victim to bullying on the popular social networking site.

“As the site gets bigger and bigger, a key focus for us is just to make sure that we’re creating a trusted environment where people can share and connect with others comfortably,” said Facebook.com spokeswoman Nicky Jackson Colaco.

“We don’t want people worrying about their safety on Facebook,” she said.

9-year-old boy found hanged
at school ...

26 January, 2010 12:30 pM

Questions concerning what seems to be the hanging suicide of a 9-year-old Texas grade-schooler are beginning to focus on bullying as a contributing factor in his death. The body of elementary student Montana Lance was found hanged in the bathroom of Stewart's Creek Elementary School in The Colony, Texas, Thursday afternoon, according to CBS News, shocking the surrounding community. The Colony Police said that a school staff member found the body, reporting that the boy had apparently hung himself.

Police are investigating the circumstances of Montana Lance's death but do not foresee charges being made. School officials have refused to comment, citing privacy policies. Counselors were at the school Friday for parents and students to help cope with the tragic incident. The Associated Press reported that counselors would be made available though the following week.

13-year-old boy found hanged...
24 January, 2010 5:54 pM

A FAMILY was struck by tragedy when a 13-year-old boy was found by his younger brother hanging in their shared bedroom.

Harry Robinson, of Gamble's Green, near Hatfield Peverel, had spent the day playing in the snow with friends, and on his PlayStation games console, before he was found by 11-year-old Charlie.

Family and friends paid tribute to the keen Air Training Corps cadet, who had suffered at the hands of bullies in the past although his father said that had changed over the last year.

Father Simon Robinson, who is estranged from Amanda Keable, the mother of the two boys, said: "He had gone through a rough time in the past, but we thought that he had mostly put it behind him since he joined the Air Cadets.

"He was a lovely, fun lad – I just wish he was here so I could ask him 'what do you think you were playing at?'

"There hadn't been any big catastrophe – he had a good Christmas and we had really noticed a difference in him recently."

Bullying eyed in girl's death
23 January, 2010 8:24 pM

CHARMING’: A fence outside the home of Phoebe Prince serves as a memorial to the 15-year-old, who committed suicide earlier this month.

She moved to South Hadley from Ireland with her mother six months ago.

A “charming” 15-year-old girl who committed suicide in South Hadley days before a big dance was bullied after school, on her cell phone and on social-networking sites, her principal said in a heart-rending letter to parents.

Phoebe Prince and her mother moved to the quiet enclave in Western Massachusetts from Ireland about six months ago, a friend said. She was found dead inside her Webster Street home Jan. 14 following public spats with classmates over dating.

“Some students made mean-spirited comments to Phoebe in school and on the way home from school, but also through texting and social-networking Web sites,” wrote Dan Smith, principal of South Hadley High School. “This insidious, harassing behavior knows no bounds.”

Racial bullying roils a
Philadelphia High School

21 January, 2010 6:32 pM

PHILADELPHIA -- The blocks surrounding South Philadelphia High School are a melting pot of pizzerias fronted by Italian flags, African hair-braiding salons and a growing number of Chinese, Vietnamese and Indonesian restaurants.

Inside is a cauldron of cultural discontent that erupted in violence last month - off-campus and lunchroom attacks on about 50 Asian students, injuring 30, primarily at the hands of blacks. The Asian students, who boycotted classes for more than a week afterward, say they've endured relentless bullying by black students while school officials turned a blind eye to their complaints.

"We have suffered a lot to get to America and we didn't come here to fight," Wei Chen, president of the Chinese American Student Association, told the school board in one of several hearings on the violence. "We just want a safe environment to learn and make more friends. That's my dream.

Beat Bullying in Megan's Name...
19 January, 2010 9:35 aM

FULFILLING her lifetime ambition of swimming with dolphins, pretty teenager Megan Gillan cuddles up close to one of the creatures and beams for the camera.

It's a snap her devastated mum Margaret, 54, cherishes, as just six weeks later her beloved daughter was dead, driven to an overdose by vicious bullies.

Today is the anniversary of Megan's death and Margaret and her family are backing a shocking new anti-bullying campaign, released to commemorate the heart-wrenching event.

A controversial advert, created for the charity Beatbullying, shows a young girl brutally sewing her mouth shut to symbolise how teens feel unable to speak out about online abuse. It has been judged too disturbing for TV, and instead is being shown in cinemas, online and on billboards nationwide.

"Happy Times..." Megan poses on a beach on holiday.

Margaret, a hospital worker, said: "Kids and parents need to see this advert as bullying costs more lives all the time.

"The issue should be brought into the open as it can affect any family, anywhere."

Bubbly Megan, 15, was the youngest of four sisters in a close-knit, loving family.

Bright with plenty of friends, she loved going to the cinema, sleepovers and gossiping with her pals.

High school students ride the
bus to lessen bullying
.
17 January, 2010 11:35 pM

DANVERS
— Wearing a neon green vest, Danvers High sophomore Shannon Underwood wound up riding a Smith Elementary School bus last Wednesday.

No, Underwood had not gotten on the wrong route. Instead she was kicking off a new school bus monitor program designed to lessen bullying among younger students and improve rider safety.

Underwood, who hopes to be an elementary school teacher someday, sat toward the back of the bus where nearly all of the 14 students who regularly ride Bus 11 sat like church mice.

"I've never heard you this quiet," said bus driver Jane Mitchell of Peabody, who told students that if Underwood asked them to sit down or keep quiet, they should do so.

"Did everyone welcome Shannon?" Mitchell asked.

"Hi, Shannon," the students replied.

When asked what her role might be, Underwood said: "Just to try and make it more of a safe environment for kids so they feel safe riding."

Bonita Springs Charter students
working w/peers to stop bullying

07 January, 2010 7:35 pM

LEE COUNTY — In some regards, it might seem like a part of growing up — a rite of passage.

But child psychiatrists and educators are starting to recognize bullying as a major problem that not only can inflict severe emotional scars, but turn kids to violence and self-harm.

In Florida, the Jeffrey Johnston Stand up for All Students Act was passed in 2008, named in honor of a Cape Coral teenager student who took his own life after constant bullying. The law requires strict reporting of bullying incidents, as well as education for both the bullies and the bullied.

But at Bonita Springs Charter School, students are taking matters into their own hands. The consequences, say staff, have led to a more respectful, more harmonious environment for students at the kindergarten through eighth-grade school.

“For the bullying part, I rely heavily on the peer counselors,” said guidance counselor Robert Barnes. “(Kids) can listen to a guidance counselor for hours and hours and it ain’t going to do any good.”

Social Bullying in Middle School
By Elizabeth Bennett

06 January, 2010 1:43 pM

The middle schools years are the worst for most anyone out there. Physically the body goes through many changes as the child enters the teen years. These changes are new and can be a little scary for both males and females.

Psychologically, it is during this period where friendships become most important in the life of the child and parents begin to take a back seat to these new relationships. Seeking independence becomes a great issue. As a result, everything learned from those in authority are forgotten and what is important is what the peer group does and says. Puberty can have a great and lasting affect upon children as they begin to grow up.

Battling Bullies Online:
'Not one family will go without an issue'

04 January, 2010 11:12 aM

Is your child a cyberbully?

If they have ever used technology by e-mailing or texting to intentionally harm, harass, stalk or threaten someone, then they are engaging in an act known as cyberbullying.

According to Wendy Frable, director of public information at Pocono Mountain School District, though there may not be a lot of cyberbullying going on in the school itself, it is part of the technology curriculum at all levels, including the kindergarten-through-eighth-grade curriculum.

"Our teachers teach lessons on cyberbullying starting in kindergarten. The lessons are age-appropriate for the children. Also, in fifth grade, in addition to cyberbullying being addressed through the technology curriculum, cyberbullying is included in the health curriculum block on bullying," said Frable.

Bullying Policy Long Overdue
04 January, 2010 11:12 aM

CAMDEN — The signs of trouble are sometimes all over 12-year-old Tariq Samad's face, his family says.

The scratches, cuts, even a black eye, are proof that her son is bullied in Camden schools, said Barbara Garwood, Tariq's mother.

Garwood suspects the problems stem from her family's religion, Islam. She said she sees prejudice and misunderstanding against Muslims throughout South Jersey. This is manifested toward Tariq because, she said, he is not allowed to tuck in his uniform as a Muslim. He must wear loose-fitting clothing as well as a kufi, or brimless cap.

"Kids were snatching it off of his head. Security in school was telling him to take it off," Garwood said. "He would tell the teachers, and security and lunch aides, but they would not pay Tariq any mind. They would throw his kufi into the trash and call him names."

A Training Course Against
School Violence!

04 January, 2010 6:48 pM

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO -- School administrators came together Monday in the fight against violence in schools. The training course was taught by clinical psychologist Dr. Dewey Cornell. Cornell has worked with many juvenile and adult violent offenders -- some of whom made national headlines.

Larry Borland, chief of security in Academy School District 20, told FOX21 News the training will result in more efficient responses to a threat.

“Somewhere in the Pikes Peak region, we have a school threat everyday,” said Borland.

According to Cornell's training course, a common denominator among many of the school shooters is bullying. He says the killer at one point was severely bullied or teased by other classmates. A major portion of the training was how to detect bullying and how to resolve it.

“We want all of our kids to be safe. We want them to be safe and comfortable when they are at their schools, and that's why we don't want people to engage in bullying and we want to bring everyone's awareness up about the dangerous of bullying,”

Bullied in our own bedrooms:
Vicious cyber-bullying is driving young
girls to their deaths

20 December, 2009 9:01 pM

A month ago, Amy Louise Paul was a happy, lively 13-year- old who enjoyed going to school and seeing her friends. Then one of those friends turned against her.
In the past, this schoolgirl spat may have resulted in some name-calling or even a fight; Amy Louise and her mother would have preferred that.

For instead, the 'friend' set up a group on the internet called We Hate Amy Louise - 'for all of those people who hoped she would die already' - and invited her school friends to join. Which many did, adding their own malicious comments and encouragement.

'I didn't believe it at first because we were friends,' Amy, from Peterborough, says tearfully. 'I still can't believe it - I can't get it out of my mind.

'If it was to my face we could have argued and sorted it out between ourselves but instead she asked all her friends to write about me on the internet.

'It's much worse because it's more public than name-calling. When I first saw the comments she'd written I wanted to kill myself.'

A boy, ballet & bullies
20 December, 2009 8:51 pM

The moms crowd the doorway to peer at the dancers running and skipping around in the baby ballet class. The girls in their pink leotards look like butterflies.

There's not a boy in sight – except for the little guy with the big dark eyes, on the floor by his mother's feet. He wants to do what the girls are doing. He's too young for the class, but, at 2, he doesn't know that. He runs inside the room.

He's better at it than the girls, but he can't stay. Not this time, nor all the other times afterward when he bolts away from his dad or his mom to join in the dance.

The next year, Patrick Frenette gets to join his sister Emma in the ballet class. They continue together in their training year after year.

For much of that time, Patrick was the only boy in ballet. Kids at his elementary school made fun of him, ostracized him, attacked him.

But he kept dancing.

Why do kids who witness bullying

Kids bullying other kids: victims and witnesses

As reported in an article by ScienceDaily December 15, 2009, “Witnesses to bullying may face more mental health risks than bullies and victims,” students who witness bullying of their peers may suffer more psychologically than the victim or the bullies.

The study design

2002 students ages 12 to 16 were surveyed at public schools in England. The survey asked them whether they’d committed, witnessed, or been the victim of several types of bullying behavior (e.g., kicking, name-calling, threatening, etc.) and whether they had experienced psychological stress symptoms such as anxiety, depression, or hostility.

Bullies use the web to spread their hurt
20 December, 2009 8:36 pM

The old schoolyard bully who haunted the places a teacher's eye somehow never reached is increasingly taking a backseat to a new kind of bully who uses the Internet's constant playground and knows no boundaries.

Emboldened by the Web's veil of anonymity, students who would never openly bully are roaming cyberspace to hurt and humiliate their peers. Experts say the trend is growing even among elementary school children who are waging war through texts, e-mails and instant messages.

"All of our kids are using these technologies, and we want to make sure that they know how to use them responsibly," said David Langston, assistant principal at Skyland Elementary School in Greer.

Teen's family tries to raise
awareness of cyber bullying

20 December, 2009 8:34 pM

They found her hanging inside a bathroom stall at San Jose's Del Mar High School, a cord from a sweatshirt tied around her neck. Her note read, in part, "Yes this is suicide. Deal with it. Nothing can stop me now. I will kill myself."

One year later in what would have been her senior year, 17-year-old Amanda Brownell lies in a vegetative state in a private San Jose nursing home. Her eyes flicker, and her voice gurgles as if she's trying to talk.

What pushed her over the edge — careless gossip, scurrilous rumors or cyberbullying? No one knows for sure. But her parents are convinced she was a victim of cyberbullying, and along with Cambrian Park United Methodist Church and People Acting in Community Together have launched "The Amanda Network Anti-bullying campaign."

Alannah & Madeline Foundation Expert
Maree Stanley explains what you
should do about Bullying

17 December, 2009 11:37 AM

BULLYING will never be eliminated entirely, but there are ways to reduce it, says Alannah and Madeline Foundation expert Maree Stanley.

It was important for schools to have a policy to tackle bullying, which included helping both the target and the bully, she said.

Tips to tackle and prevent bullying:

BE an active bystander. Children witnessing bullying should report it - it's not dobbing, it's helping someone.

A CHILD being bullied should tell someone - it doesn't have to be the principal or a teacher, just someone they trust.

IF someone's telling you they are being bullied, listen to them because they are doing it for a reason.

IF parents become aware it is happening to their child, they need to tell the school, which needs time to be able deal with it.

Taking on Bullies
02 December, 2009 11:37 AM

Bullying has evolved from the playground days of pushing. Today, bullying has stormed the Internet and takes on many forms. People of all ages are using the Internet to vent their frustrations and take out their anger. Cheryl Dellasega, founder of Club Ophelia and a professor at Penn State Harrisburg

Lower Dauphin junior Elizabeth Rockwell sees bullying on a daily basis in the halls of her high school.
While the bullying in high school differs from the verbal put-downs of her middle school days, she said it is still disturbing knowing that so many kids are bullies and so many others are the targets.

“From what I see, a lot of people send mean text messages and sometimes threats,” she said. “It happens to both boys and girls here. In some cases, I think students have only known bullying in their lives – maybe from home too – so they end up doing it at school. Other times, I just think they have nothing better to do.”

What Rockwell describes is common among middle and high schools nationwide. While verbal bullying is common in middle school, Rockwell describes seeing more fistfights in the halls of the high school.

In middle school girls could join clubs that promoted self-esteem, but in high school students wouldn’t want to join a club like that, she said.

“A lot of people who do get bullied don’t want to tell anyone,” Rockwell said. “It makes them feel like they can’t handle it on their own, or like they are a snitch.”

Can bullies be stopped?

The incessant bullying by classmates that followed when the photo spread put an emotional weight upon Hope that she ultimately could not bear.

'Ginger Attacks' at Calabasas School
linked to Cyber-Bullying

30 November, 2009 3:20 PM

What began as an effort by the animated TV show "South Park" to lampoon prejudice found a life of its own at a Calabasas middle school after a Facebook page inspired some students to attack redheaded 7th- and 8th-graders, officials said today.

Three boys have been booked for various crimes connected with the "ginger bashing" carried out Nov. 20 at A.E. Wright Middle School. The Facebook page had dubbed it "National Kick a Ginger Day."

Four girls and three boys were the victims of physical or verbal abuse because of their red hair, freckles and pale complexions. Detectives are still trying to determine how long each attack lasted, but one may have been up to a half-hour, officials said.

Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. John Benedict said two 12-year-old boys were detained and booked on charges of "battery on school property because of the cumulative incidents through the day."

"This was not one incident but a number of incidents throughout the day," Benedict said.

A 13-year-old boy was booked for cyber-bullying or making a threat via electronic communication.

School District Approves Anti- Bullying
Policy

29 November, 2009 2:10 PM

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - The Natrona County School District has approved an anti-bullying policy that targets using electronic devices to engage in cyberbullying or sending text messages with sexual content, called sexting.

Marty Wood, director of the district's safe schools office, says the district defines sexting as electronically sending anything of a sexual nature to someone who would find it offensive.

Kathleen Dixon, attorney for the school board, says the policy targets any type of "intentional electronic communication done with the intent to harm, to embarrass, to demean."

The state Legislature required all school districts to pass an anti-bullying policy by Dec. 31, and the district approved its policy last week.

Standing Up To Bullying!
27 November, 2009 11:24 AM

When most people think of bullying, they think about physical altercations. But during International Standup to Bullying Day Nov. 20, School 4 guidance counselor Nancy Sanders said bullying is not always obvious.

"We as educators find that children who are perpetual bullies are usually the students who have very good social skills with adults," said Sanders. "So it goes underground."

Sanders explained why students and teachers wore pink shirts with a message inscribed against bullying.

"There was a case in Canada where a boy came to school in a pink shirt and a lot of kids bullied him," Sanders said.

According to Sanders, bullies will act polite and reserved around adults. But when they're among peers, they'll "switch" their behavior. Signs that children are being bullied include a drop in grades and not wanting to attend school.

Tina Meier to speak at Ga. Highlands
25 November, 2009 3:37 PM

A speech by a mother whose daughter committed suicide following online bullying has been rescheduled for Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Floyd campus of Georgia Highlands College and Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Cartersville campus.

The presentations were originally scheduled for earlier this month but had been postponed.

Tina Meier will present “When a Friend Request Brings Death: The Story of Megan Meier” as part of the college’s fall speaker series. Meier will describe her daughter’s tragic suicide resulting from online bullying on MySpace, an online social networking site.

The Cartersville presentation takes place in Room 160 and it will be in the Lakeview auditorium on the Floyd campus. Lectures are free to students and the public.

In October 2006 Tina Meier found her 13-year-old daughter Megan hanging from her bedroom closet. Despite attempts to save her, Megan died the next day, just weeks away from her 14th birthday.

Megan had been involved in an online friendship with “Josh Evans,” who she thought was a teen boy. After an argument, messages and bulletins went to hundreds of kids saying, “Megan Meier is a slut.”

Six weeks after Megan’s suicide, Tina Meier learned that Josh Evans never existed. In fact, the originators of the Evans account were Lori Drew, an adult neighbor who lived down the street from the Meiers, her 13-year-old daughter, a former friend of Megan’s and an 18-year-old employee of Drew’s.

The tragedy drove Meier to found the Megan Meier Foundation to bring awareness and education about cyberbullying to students, parents and educators so that such behavior can be eliminated.

IF YOU GO

What: “When a Friend Request Brings Death: The Story of Megan Meier”

First date: Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. at Floyd campus of Georgia Highlands College

Second chance: Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at GHC’s Cartersville campus

Get connected kits will be ready to ship this week so those that have been
waiting, thank you for being patient... You guys are all on top of the list and
